I come for one thing and one thing only - motsunabe. This place offers the most affordable motsunabe on the island at just $17 per person, and the portions are incredibly generous. The motsunabe here is a true masterpiece: the buttery, sweet motsu combined with a savory dashi broth and a mountain of cabbage is simply divine. They don't skimp on the chives and burdock either, which adds to the rich and satisfying experience. And what better way to finish off the meal than with a serving of ramen, perfectly soaking up all the delicious flavors left in the pot? Admittedly, the rest of the menu is average, but the exceptional quality of the motsunabe more than makes up for it. For this reason, it remains one of my favorite Japanese restaurants on the island.
Place to get skewers at a great price and quality. Every skwer tastes great and service is good. Restaurant has a great theme and good vibe.
Carp Dori is in McCully Shopping Center on the top floor. It's located at the end that is opposite of Fook Yuen Seafood Restaurant. They have tables in the main dining room that can accommodate small to medium sized parties. Larger parties could be possible if you have reservations as they probably have to rearrange the tables. We came for lunch and the restaurant filled up quickly shortly after we were seated. Glad we got there early so we could get our drinks and food without waiting too long. It was a quick lunch so we ordered a bottle of sake, a pitcher or beer, 2 Yakitori 5 Skewers + Edamame, Hamachi Sashimi, Kanpachi Sashimi and Tako Wasabi. Price is reasonable and the food was good. Customer service was friendly and we were able to try out a new restaurant for a quick meal. Worth checking out in McCully Shopping Center if you're craving Izakaya.
A great hidden spot for a late night eat, my friends and I had just finished working out and wanted something relatively healthy and this hit the spot. Tucked in the corner on the third floor of the mccully shopping center, I never knew this existed, but I am glad I tried it. It was a nice healthier option than everything else which seemed like fried food at that time. I did not know what to expect with the fried garlic but it was delicious, sweet even from the fry- it was great to spread on something or on its own. Just a little work to peel it. The beef tongue was a hit with my party and we all almost wanted more and I really liked the shiso leaf with the ume, you don't get to have that flavor everywhere. Definitely adding this to my list of late night eats.
Server was only one for a fairly full Resturant at lunch time. She was friendly and efficient. Their Hiroshima ramen had the best shoyu/pork broth i have been blessed to eat. It was well garnished and affordably priced. Having seen and heard of nanban chicken, i just had to try it. The chicken was deliciously juicy but i had the "tartar sauce" in my mind as a little less chunky and more of a sauce so with that i was a little disappointed. Agedashi tofu was delicious and the sauce accompaniment enhanced the umami flavor. I wish i ordered the fried chicken skin but i guess that's a great reason to go back.
We dined there on valentines night for a quick casual dinner. It's a nice little place with a sports (baseball) theme. We were seated and looked through the menu as the wait staff brought us water. They had specials as well as ramen, and yakitori, which we went for. The wait staff was friendly and answered all our questions, as well as suggested some item we should try. We placed our order and the food came out pretty quick. We ordered some of their special (6 piece) tempura as well as different types of yakitori and some side dishes. We were lucky that we made reservations for 6pm and they had happy hour til 6:45pm. I am not sure if it's only weeknights, so you would have to check. All the food we ordered were cooked nice, hot and fresh. We liked that we could order yakitori AS well as tempura. Overall, our experience here was pretty good from the food (a couple of things could have been cooked a little less) the wait staff was nice, and the restaurant was nice and cozy.... We would dine here again... we could only try so many things this time because it was only us two LoL.
Fun, casual and energetic atmosphere. Great service and delicious food. Lots of authentic Japanese items. Plenty of vegetarian options. We were visiting and staying nearby in Waikiki. It was nice to get off the main strip and walk across the canal to this little strip mall that's filled with places to eat. After a short, we were seated at the counter, which was perfectly comfortable.
It's like a going home for mom... Hiroshima is her hometown and Carp Dori's decor is filled with Hiroshima's hometown baseball team the Carp. The nostalgia doesn't end there many of the menu item does take me back to Hiroshima which yes I've visited on many occasions and have visited family which after decades of not seeing one another just reunited like it was yesterday and that was so special. Though very far from home you're never too far in heart and having her home cooked meals do still reminds me of Hiroshima and Japanese foods makes this place somewhere I've always wanting to take her. Let me tell you I never seen her order so much food...usually keeping it simple tonight was not the occasion, she ordered Hiroshima 9 skewers set course, Hiroshima Style Okonomiyaki (my ultimate personal favorite), Agedashi tofu, Goma Kanpachi, and Hiroshima Spicy cold Dashi Noodle. Let me tell you we came hungry...half way through knowing we couldn't finish it all we decided to hold off on some of the skewers though all was so amazing each different yet taste was cooked just perfectly the Goma Kanpachi mom loved it was like a poke style as the sashimi was tossed in coma shoyu sauce, the agedashi was a refreshing side to compliment it all, cold dash noodle was okay I guess in comparison to the other dish this one didn't impress me much though don't get me wrong it was good. The Hiroshima Style Okonomiyaki is the ultimate all things that I love from this town (oysters for mom) it was done just exactly how it should unlike the Osaka style of everything dumped in the batter Hiroshima style is all layered and there no comparison which is the best and knowing I can find the true way here you know we'll be back. ありがとのぅ Thank you!
The shop is tucked away at the end of the 2nd floor of McCully shopping center. It seems like it can get pretty busy here, so I would recommend reservations or calling ahead to check their availability. The food here is excellent. It's Izakaya style, so small dishes that you can eat alone or share. My favorite was the okonomiyaki. They also have a large selection of skewers to choose from and they were all cooked well. Will definitely be back!
We went to Carp Dori the other weekend for dinner. We used to go to the restaurant that was there a while ago. The previous restaurant was a ramen restaurant that was delicious. Not sure how long Carp Dori has been in business but we just randomnly decided to check them out. We didn't have reservations so we had to wait a little for a table. When we entered it looked pretty much the same as when we last went. Carp Dori menu is more like yakitori and extras. They offer a variety of dishes. We like eating skewer dishes so we got chicken meatballs, bacon wrapped enoki mushrooms, miso eggplant, and asparagus. We also got non skewer items like, french fries, corn on the cob, yaki onigiri, chicken karaage, and okonomiyaki. I really liked all of the food there. They have a good system. Then have a buzzer at your table and you just ring it when you want them to serve you. They come really quickly. They were also quick to refill waters. My daughter really liked the chicken meatballs. I think there were about three on a stick and she ate 3 skewers, 9 pieces! My favorite was probably the okonomiyaki. I like the hiroshima style okonomiyaki with the noodles. I hope to come back to try a few more of their other menu items.
